6 Great Shrubs For Winter Interest

Writer's picture: ourhillhomesteadourhillhomestead

One of the most important parts of landscape gardening is seasonal interest. It is one thing that I have been notoriously bad at keeping up with through the years. However I am getting better at it. Over the years I have however learned a great deal about seasonal plants. So I'm hoping that by encouraging you to plant for interest all year long I will also encourage myself. I would like to note that I am in zone 7A and most plants I discuss are focused on my zone. However I will give the zone information, and link to the plants.

So let's start with 6 easy and wonderful shrubs for some Winter garden interest.

Sprinter Boxwood- Most boxwoods are evergreen however I particularly like the Sprinter boxwoods for my garden because it does not put off that cat urine oder that some boxwoods do. Sprinters are zones 5-9 and you can find more information HERE

Bollywood Azalea- If you know me you know I'm a sucker for varigated foliage and this azalea does not disappoint! Most azalea are evergreen and I also love that it is compact enough to tuck in most beds as it only gets about 3ft tall by 2ft wide! She is a zone 6-9 and you can find more information HERE

Stonehenge Dark Druid Yew- Ok well first the name! I love it! Secondly I think this evergreen is so romantic in its fluffiness! This little shrub can handle sun or shade and I love them in containers as well as borders. It is a zone 4-7 and you can get more information HERE

Berry Poppins Winterberry- Another fantastic name! While not evergreen these beautiful berries really standout through winter and look great in arrangements! This variety stays on the smaller side at 4 foot and is zone 3-9. Please note that for these winterberry to produce berries you have to also have a male pollinator, in this case the Mr. Poppins shrub. More information can be found HERE

Little Goblin Winterberry Holly- I'm telling you who ever names thee is a gem! And so is this plant! To me you can not have winter without holly and this little shrub is a fantastic producer! She is a zone 3-9 and like the previous shrub she also needs a pollinator, this one would be Little Goblin Guy. More information can be found HERE

Berry Heavy Gold Winterberry- Oh I can not tell you how much I absolutely love these gold berries for decorating and arrangements. Unlike the previous shrubs this one gets pretty large, about 8ft to be exact but it will be just full of these beautiful berries. Similar to the other winterberry this too needs a pollinator, you can use Mr. Poppins for this one as well. This beauty is a zone 3-9 and you can get more info HERE

This is just a small list of beautiful shrubs for winter interest. These are ones I personally would like to add to my gardens at my current home. We have had these or similar varieties in previous gardens so I know they are all going to be wonderful! Please note that we are in no way associated with, or sponsored by Proven Winners. You will see us talking about the brand often because we know they are a quality brand, one we have been using in our gardens for years.
