The Magic of Garden Tea

Writer's picture: ourhillhomesteadourhillhomestead

Fall is here and the gardens are winding down. I hate to see it go but in truth I am ready. I am ready for crisp sweater weather, the amber trees and cool nights sleeping with the windows open. And while I'm dreaming of next years gardens I still want to get the most I can from the garden as long as possible. My tomatoes may be gone but there are still a lot of things to harvest, one of my favorite is Teas.

It sounds funny to say I'm going to harvest tea but that's what I do. I gather flowers, leaves, herbs and berries and make so many teas that are not only yummy but they are also good for all kinds of ailments. Over in our Etsy shop we stay stocked with a lot of different tea blends. I think we tend to over think Tea as some mystical thing that we can not get from our own yards. And we also under think tea and the benefits that it has on use mentally and physically. I think most people know that Chamomile is good for rest but that is as far as common knowledge goes for tea benefits.

Here are just a few herbs you can steep as a tea and their benefits:

Ginger: Helps sooth the stomach and ease nausea

Echinacea: Helps to speed the recovery of colds and flus

Pineapple Sage: Is good for your skin and body as it has lots of antioxidants.

Rose Petals: To help relax you, improve your spirits and ease muscle pain.

A favorite recipe of mine is what I call Gardener's Tea it is a mix of things I think you can find in most gardens.

Gardener's Tea Recipe:

  • Rose Petals

  • Thyme

  • Chamomile~ Can Substitute with Catnip or ElderFlowers ( I prefer Elderflowers)

  • Lavender

  • Mint Or Cinnamon (I prefer cinnamon)

Combine a pinch of each in a tea ball or make a tea bag from cheese cloth. Steep for 6-10 mins

Add honey and cream to taste
